We took the morning ferry from Halibut Cove back to Homer, then began the drive to Seward. Leaving Homer, we got a great view back on the Kachemak Bay:
We stopped along the way at a small coastal town, and again found bald eagles on the beach: (i think that's mt redoubt -- a volcano -- in the background).
As we were walking off the beach, that eagle flew up right behind us, no more than 10 feet away, and dropped this , missing us by only about 4 feet. I don't know why...
Then it was on to Seward. Just before we got to Seward, we came to Exit Glacier and decided to stop. Boy, what a great decision that was. Amazing views, up close to the glacier.
From a few miles away, here's the glacier:
Then you get closer, and see how big it really is
(I am working on a better job of pasting together the panorama shots...)
And when you get still closer, you realise how small you are
and how much ice is waiting to come crashing down on top of you
Leaving the glacier, you can see where it melts and washes out into a braided river
We wanted to hike up to the Harding Ice Field above the glacier, but it was a 7 mile roundtrip hike and it was starting to get late. So we walked partway up and found our first sign of a moose!
As exciting as that was, though, we decided it was time to get in to Seward.
